Every Melbourne suburb has at least one of these residences. Before the turn of the century, from the 1900s to the 2000s, every suburb had at least one business called a milk bar. Usually, but not always on a corner, the milk bar was the precursor to the ubiquitous convenience shops. Milk bars primarily sold milk, bread, the daily newspapers and a range of food items that one might need in an emergency. Milk bars were the go-to before the advent of supermarkets and service stations selling food and drinks. When milk-bars went out of fashion, the owners who often lived behind the milk-bar or in a home next to the milk-bar, converted the shop area into a living room, or a school for singing, or a hairdressing salon. This particular dwelling with colourful red and white canvas curtains caught my eye as I drove along the street, as did the bicycle leaning againt the wall, the man sitting on the footpath and the array of signage on the pole on the corner.
