Commissioned by Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, the monumental wall-sized painting Music was designed as a visual counterpart to Dance.
- Composition: Matisse placed five simplified, abstracted figures across a vibrant, flat field of green (earth), blue (sky), and red (human vitality).
- Visual Rhythm: The rigidly positioned violinist evokes a treble clef, while the remaining seated and standing figures act like notes on a musical staff.
- Meaning: It captures a state of harmony and spiritual release, stripping away mundane realities to represent humanity immersed in creative energy.
‘Music’ is an impressive display of his innovative use of color and form to express emotion. The subject matter revolves around the theme of music, depicted through a group of individuals immersed in their musical instruments. Unlike traditional art forms that sought to reproduce reality, Matisse’s approach leaned towards abstraction while still remaining figurative.
Matisse was one among prominent artists who spearheaded revolutionary movement during early 20th century famously referred towards as ‘Fauvism’.
